Water Polo is not new in Afghanistan.
I can tell you that it used to be played in Pulcharkhi pool of Kabul about 27 years ago.

Was it played professionally or recreational only?

I know it was played Provisionally by military club members (usually athletes serving their military service) located in ShashDarak close to US Embassy and Amani High School.
But I don’t know how long it lasted.
I witnessed one of their training sessions in PuleCharKhi pool in around early 80s.
Recreationally, I used to play that myself with friends.
Most Kabulis learned about this sport first time after Moscow Olympia was broadcasted trough Kabul TV in 1980.

Good to know, I didn't know that.  Now we have a national team for the first time, and they are preparing to participate hopefully in the olympics.  I know I'll be watching.  Smiley
